“There are many medal groups in the national collections but there are few which rival those of Bill Speakman,” says Patrick. “While attached to the 1st King’s Own Scottish Borderers in Korea in 1951, Private Speakman was awarded the Victoria Cross, Britain’s premier decoration for gallantry in the face of the enemy. While under attack from Communist forces, Speakman repeatedly charged the enemy, even though wounded, giving his company time to retire to safety. He was the last soldier from a Scottish regiment to be awarded the Victoria Cross. Sadly, Bill Speakman died in June 2018.”
