MUSICALS AND OPERA ThE MAN AND MEN Hill Street tHeatre (Venue 41) HHHHH
The sexes have apparently vanished in this somewhat confused production by North of england Concert Theatre.
Despite the title, the only singer is female and the other ghoulish characters, all musicians, look like escapees from a lunatic asylum. Pitched as “an opera in one breath”, Joshua Goodman’s setting of a string of ambiguous musings by Tom Riley is indeed a funereallypaced affair with little to engage the audience in terms of narrative or musical structure. A pity, as the five musicians are competent players; they deserve better material than this.
Until 30 August. Today 4:35pm.
