COMEDY AN AuDiENCE with iMRAN Yusuf LAUgHiNg HorSE @ ESpioNAgE (VENUE 185) HHHHH

The Scotsman - - Fringereviews Hotshow -

ImrAn yusuf is an immensely likeable comedian with a cheerful, confident delivery. his material manages to be friendly and accessible and at the same time thought-provoking – about Americans and suffering antienglish prejudice, about cultural identity and personal insecurity, depression and redemption, religion and the BnP.

he demonstrates, with equal passion, the “game face” that men have to adopt when attempting to chat up women, the pointlessness of orthodox religious “labels” and the difficulty of passing the Citizenship test.

the hour is studded with beautifully-judged asides to people (mainly women) in the audience. they are obviously after the manner of The Fast

Show jazz club’s Louis Balfour, but yusuf works them well. he strays pretty far from the comedy path at several points in the show, but has a good sense of when to subvert, when to tag and when simply to break off and turn a corner. Because of the disparate nature of the ingredients here, there is something of a feeling of his comedy blender lacking the power to mix them into a proper show.

But this is an interesting and entertaining hour, though Imran yusuf regrets there will be no dinosaur impressions in this show.
