FIVE KEY POINTS

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn caused controversy in Scotland, with Scottish party leader Kezia Dugdale forced to deny the accusation she has been undermined by Mr Corbyn on independence, telling The Scotsman that she gave her backing to the Labour manifesto which opposes another referendum. Broadcaster STV has rescheduled its Scottish leaders’ debate which was postponed last week in the aftermath of the Manchester terrorist attack. It will now take place next Tuesday, two days before the vote, with Nicola Sturgeon already having agreed to take part and urging her rivals to do the same. The main story of the day was the SNP manifesto launch, which took place in Perth yesterday – the party was obviously keen to display a show of strength with the number of activists they had in attendance, though Nicola Sturgeon had to chide them for booing a journalist who asked a difficult question. The First Minister wanted the headline news to be about the policies that her MPS in Westminster will pursue, though perhaps most notable in the manifesto is a marked softening of her stance on another referendum, with the demand only being that it is held at the end of the “Brexit process”. Ruth Davidson’s Conservatives have made independence the central plank of their general election campaign, with a not particularly welcoming welcome party of Tory activists, including MSP Murdo Fraser, left, protesting outside the SNP manifesto launch urging voters to back them to block a second referendum. TODAY The BBC’S general election debate takes place at 7:30pm. It will feature party leaders and senior figures from the Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats, SNP, Plaid Cymru, the Green Party and Ukip.
