Taylor looking forward to silencing Davies

- By NEIL MCGLADE

Commonwealth super lightweight champion Josh Taylor says he is desperate to finally prove he’s a better boxer than Ohara Davies when they duo meet at Glasgow’s Braehead Arena in five weeks’ time.

Englishman Davies, who holds the WBC Silver belt, has made no secret of his desire to go head-to-head with Scotland’s hottest prospect and will be granted his wish on Saturday 8 July.

However, 26-year-old Taylor has been riled by some of his opponent’s comments on social media and will now look to do his talking in the ring. Both boxers came face to face yesterday at the Glasgow Marriott but Davies appeared to be somewhat subdued.

“I know Davies is dangerous as he can punch. You’ve got to give him some credit for having had 12 knockouts from 15 fights so I’m not stupid enough to just blank him out,” Taylor said.

“I’m going to have to be smart, be patient and outbox him. He’s maybe had more fights than me in the pros but I had loads more fights than 0 Josh Taylor: Fighting in Glasgow for the first time. him as an amateur, against a lot of different styles. I just want to prove I’m a far better boxer than he is.

“His true personality will come out as we get closer to the fight and he’ll be back given it big licks on Twitter. It’s just the same for me, though. I am really looking forward to shutting his mouth up and bringing him down a peg or two.”

Taylor made a first successful defence of his Commonwealth title with a sixthround stoppage of South Africa’s Warren Joubert in March at Edinburgh’s Meadowbank Stadium. July’s contest, though, will be the first time the Scot has boxed in Glasgow.
