A dynamic future

-

I am writing in relation to your article ”Students unprepared for reality of university life” (4 July). I was not surprised by the findings of the Higher Education Policy Institute and Unite Students – that expectations of studying at university and the reality do not match up.

Sadly, the feedback my colleagues and I often hear from students we support is that the transition to university can lead to unexpected challenges and concerns. In practice many colleges do have the infrastructure and resources to offer a whole host of support to young people: funding and accommodation help, school and community outreach initiatives, widening access/ participation teams, academic and assignment assistance, counselling and signposting to name but a few.

The issue is getting this information to current and prospective students, empowering them to approach those that can support them, ensuring they see it as an achievement to ask for help and not a failure.

We know that studying at university or college can be a daunting prospect for anyone, but it really doesn’t have to be. Your Dynamic Future Information Day at Edinburgh Napier University’s Sighthill campus on 13 July, a free event open to all, aims to

show young people and their support networks why. (DR) PETER TORMEY Widening Participation Edinburgh Napier University
