Holders are held as Russia produce a surprise victory

Earlier, underdogs Russia produced a surprise by defeating Italy 2-1 in Rotterdam – their first win at European finals in 13 attempts.

Goals by Elena Danilova and Elena Morozova in the first 26 minutes gave Russia a two-goal half-time lead before Italy upped their gamein the second half. Ilaria Mauro pulled a goal back three minutes from the end, sparking a frenetic finale, but 19-year-old goalkeeper Tatyana Shcherbak defied her inexperience to keep Italy at bay.
