Call To Mind has a Royal appointment at Hamilton for Haggas

- By GORDON BROWN

Call To Mind carries the Royal colours in the most valuable race on the card at Hamilton Park tonight.

Owned and bred by the Queen, the William Haggastrained son of Galileo faces six rivals in the £42,000 British Stallion Studs EBF Glasgow Stakes (Listed).

A creditable sixth in the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot, Call To Mind represents his owner who was in attendance at the Lanarkshire track 70 years ago with her father King George VI, sister Princess Margaret and future husband Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten.

Among the opposition to Call To Mind is Roger Varian’s Newmarket raider Defoe who runs in the same silks as 2014 hero Postponed, who went on to amass almost £5 million in worldwide earnings.

A fiercely competitive field of 15 contest the £34,000 John Smith’s Stewards’ Cup over six furlongs.

Top-weight Hoof It, topically owned by leading golf agent Chubby Chandler, was runner-up in the race 12 months ago.

Bottom-weight Six Strings is bidding to give Richard Fahey his fifth win in the race with former champion jockey Paul Hanagan in the saddle.

War Department and Dark Defender, both trained by Keith Dalgleish, along with Jim Goldie’s Jack Dexter, fly the flag for Scotland.

Iain Jardine was the trainer to follow at the Lanarkshire track yesterday when Yes You and Tor supplied him with a quick-fire double.

Yes You took the Racing UK Club Day Here Today Handicap for Nathan Evans while Tor was partnered by stable apprentice Jamie Gormley in the Racing UK Handicap.

Jardine said: “Our horses are in very good form which is great as this is a busy time of year.

“Jamie is improving all the time and is a hard-working lad from Langholm so he is a terrific member of the team,” added Jardine.
