Lobban and Clyne cruise into quarter-final

-

Tactics made the difference for Greg Lobban and Alan Clyne as they secured a thirdstraight victory at the World Doubles Championships in Manchester to reach tonight’s quarter-finals as Group A winners, writes Lorin Mcdougall.

The defending champions and top seeds from Inverness looked imperious on Tuesday, but Clyne predicted a closer match against Dutch giantkillers Piedro Schweertman and Dylan Bennett.

Lobban and Clyne took just 16 minutes to dish out an 11-2, 11-5 beating, and a delighted Lobban said: “We were very wary of them and it had the potential to be a tight one, but we did our homework on them. We played to their weaker areas and took advantage.”

Scottish champions Kevin Moran and Doug Kempsell kept their last eight hopes alive with a 116, 6-11, 11-7 victory over Canada’s Shawn Delierre and David Baillargeon.

In the mixed, Kempsell and Lisa Aitken upset top seeds Joelle King and Paul Coll.
