Michael Gove sparks storm over post-brexit fishing access

-

Anti-brexit politicians have hijacked the process of leaving the EU. Regaining control of fishing was one of the great prizes. Whatever is negotiated, all fish caught in the UK waters should be landed and processed at UK ports.

Scottish fishermen were fishing French waters as long ago as the mid 1800s, and French fishermen were fishing Scottish waters at the same time. Scottish fishermen have historically fished Danish, Norwegian, Icelandic and Faroese waters, with reciprocal arrangements. This reflects the seasonal movement and availability of fish stocks. Klondikers were stopped a long time ago and would still not be permitted, because what they did was like hoovering everything up. What Brexit will give us back is control over our own waters, compared to EU control, which is unfavourable to Scottish and all UK fishermen. If we were to exclude all foreign fishing boats, ours would likely lose access to those other waters. Totally excluding others would be a LOSE LOSE, whereas allowing others, under our own control, would be a WIN WIN.
