- By DUNCAN SMITH

Jessica Ennis-hill received her belated gold medal for the 2011 world championships, denied to her by a Russian drugs cheat, receiving a warm ovation in the stadium where she enjoyed her finest hour at the London Olympics.

Unfortunately, her successor as Britain’s best heptathlete, Katarina Johnson-thompson, could only finish fifth after another up and down route through the seven events.

The 24-year-old Liverpudlian put in decent showings in the long jump, javelin and 800m but couldn’t recover from her flop in the high jump, normally her best event.

“I feel like one of these days it will happen for me,” she said. “There is a lot to work on. It’s been completely stripped down... my mental attitude, the way I approach training, the way I approach each competition. Everyone said it
