Further to John R Wright’s letter regarding present day bank bean counters and their actions which seem contrary to the wishes of many of their customers, I recently received a letter from Bank of Scotland detailing their new overdraft fee structure for personal customers.the bank illustrates this by quoting a price of 1p for every £7 of overdraft per day, seemingly so reasonable it’s almost a giveaway. Perhaps a fairer illustration would be that for an overdraft of £700 a customer will pay £365 a year – a rate of more than 50 per cent. Perhaps this usury will help them to keep one or two branches open.

IAN LEWIS Mayfield Terrace, Edinburgh Further to John R Wright’s letter underlining how banks are not tailoring services to the needs of their customers, may I offer a partial solution? Community post office branches across Scotland are able to provide many basic banking services for most banks. Whilst we cannot do everything, we are here and we are local. The more these are used the more banks will provide and the longer we will be able to serve local communities. DEREK RUSSELL Whitsome, nr Duns
