Bronsky beats Hibs Colts with late strike

● Elgin progress as dramatic last gasp winner sinks capital youngsters

Hibs included summer signing Deivydas Matulevici­us as an over-age player in their under-20 side’s Irn-bru Cup tie against Elgin but it was the Moray Men who progressed with a 2-1 win.

The visitors took the lead when Chris Mcleish nodded in after 19 minutes, but Hibs equalised three minutes after the interval when Matulevici­us was fouled at the edge of the box and Fraser Murray bent the free-kick into the net.

Hibs could not grab a second and Stephen Bronsky made them pay when he headed in from a corner in the final minute.

Hearts under-20s progressed with a dramatic 3-2 win at Formartine. Goals by Archie Macphee and Max Berton had the hosts in charge at the break, but Dario Zanatta pulled a goal back on 50 minutes.

Rory Currie had a penalty saved before Zanatta equalised in injury time. Harry Paton smashed in the winner right at the end of extra time after the home side’s Billy Ferries had been dismissed.

Hearts’ Kyle Smith, who had been substitute­d, was sent off for his celebratio­ns at the winner.

Ross County’s youngsters defeated visitors Forfar 2-1, the over-age Billy Mckay lobbing them into the lead midway through the first half. Ryan Mciver quickly added a second while Mark Millar’s goal only a consolatio­n for the Loons.

Berwick defeated Kilmarnock Under-20s, first-half goals by Steven Thomson and Michael Mckenna securing a 2-0 success at Rugby Park.

In an all under-20 battle, Aberdeen defeated St Johnstone 1-0, Frank Ross scoring a fine solo goal three minutes from the break

Neil Mclaughlin grabbed a hat-trick as Partick Thistle’s youngsters defeated Stirling University 6-1. A goal by Mclaughlin separated the sides at half-time. Mark Lamont, Kevin Nisbet and Aiden Fitzpatric­k also scored after the break and Blair Lyons grabbed a consolatio­n.

Queen of the South cruised past Airdrie 4-0 at Palmerston, Derek Lyle tapping in on 14 minutes and Jason Kerr nodding in the second 11 minutes later. Darren Brownlie also netted with a header right on half-time and Shaun Rooney added the fourth three minutes from time.

Stranraer came back from two goals down to win 3-2 at Clyde thanks to Ryan Wallace’s extra-time winner. Goals by Martin Mcniff and Smart Osadolor had the Bully Wee in control before Scott Agnew’s penalty and Grant Anderson’s equaliser

Peterhead’s trip to East Fife was fruitful, the Blue Toon progressin­g courtesy of a 2-0 win. Marc Lawrence’s goal on two minuteswas followed by Scott Adams’ strike just after the hour.

Montrose won 3-1 at Stirling Albion, where Andrew Steeves cracked in the opener just before the break, and Cammy Ballantyne’s secondhalf double had the tie won before Darren Smith pulled a goal back.

Highland League Cove Rangers defeated Stenhousem­uir 2-0 at Ochilview, a Ross Dunlop own goal on 19 minutes sending them on their way and Mitch Megginson adding a penalty.

Buckie Thistle also did their bit for the Highland League with a 2-1 win over visitors Brechin. Paul Mclean’s goal for the Glebe Park men on 14 minutes was cancelled out by Keith Fraser 11 minutes into the second half, the Thistle captain also hitting the winner eight minutes from time.

Raith eased past Brora Rangers 3-0 in Kirkcaldy thanks to Ross Callachan’s header on 16 minutes and goals by Lewis Vaughan and Yaw Osei in the second half.

Albion Rovers defeated Spartans 5-4 on penalties after a goalless draw. Dumbarton winger Tom Walsh will come up against the under-20 side of former club Rangers tonight and he has told his team-mates that it will be far from a walkover.

Walsh joined the Sons in the summer for a second time after having a spell there on loan from the Ibrox club in 2016 and the 21-year-old said: “I know a few of the boys and they are good players who are working with good coaches. Beating them will not be easy and I have told my new team-mates to approach it as we would any league game.”

Rangers, who are not playing in the SPFL Developmen­t League this season but taking part in the Irnbru and SFA Youth Cups, have listed Serge Atakayi, Jamie Barjonas, Myles Beerman and Liam Burt, who have all had first-team experience, in their squad.

Queen’s Park’s head coach Gus Macpherson reckons his side will be taking on some of the best young talent in Scotland when they face Motherwell at Stirling Albion’s Forthbank ground. Macpherson said: “Motherwell are a success story when it comes to producing players. We’ll face talented youngsters who will be out to show what they can do against a senior side.”

Alloa manager Jim Goodwin is looking for his Wasps to show consistenc­y and a cutting edge against Dundee under-20s at Dens Park after a sluggish start to the season.

Goodwin said: “We will look to play the high level we can for 90 minutes and be ruthless in front of goal.”

Ayr United manager Ian Mccall wants his men to keep their fine start to the season going by seeing off East Stirling. Mccall said: “We have treated East Stirling with the same respect we have all of our opponents. We have had them watched and we will be sending out a strong team.”
