World Scrabble champ crowned

A new world Scrabble champion has been crowned – thanks to his knowledge of classroom furniture.

David Eldar, 27, beat his opponent, placing the word “carrels” – a cubicle desk – to score 74 points.

He claimed victory at Nottingham Conference Centre after competing against players from 26 countries in the MSI World Championsh­ips.

Real estate worker Mr Eldar, who has been playing the board game for 14 years, won £7,000.
