Tackling Scotland’s teacher shortage
A host of recommendations, including reviewing entry requirements, more flexible learning for mature students and drafting in specialist teachers from across the UK, are released today by the Scottish Government to address the teacher recruitment crisis.
The report also urges the UK government to reconsider its immigration approach, especially for post-study work visas to attract overseas teachers.
Larry Flanagan, general secretary of the EIS teaching union, commenting on the education and skills committee report, said: “In places it echoes current demands from the teacher unions – the need for better salaries and for enhanced careers pathways – but in other areas it seems disconnected from what is happening on schools.”
