Pensioner walking 1,000 miles for charity

- By JOHN MENZIES

A grandfather is walking 1,000 miles in 100 days to raise funds for the hospital where he was treated.

Bobby Froud, from Hawick, has set himself the challenge to raise funds for ward seven and the highdependency ward at Borders General Hospital.

He wants to give something back as a thank you for their “exemplary” treatment he received while he was in their care.

Mr Froud, 66, started in May and hopes to be finished next week.

He said he has enjoyed his journey so far despite being in his seventh decade. Nevertheless, he admits it has been difficult for him at times.

He said: “It’s challenging to do it every day – sometimes I can only manage 10,000 or 15,000 steps a day rather than my target of 20,000, but I always make it up during the rest of the week.

“I was in hospital for four days recently with an infection, but I would still keep walking in and around the wards.”

Mr Froud, who has raised £4,000 so far, has been supported throughout his mission by wife Shirley, as well as family and friends. He has also drawn inspiration from his grandsons, who each ran a mile a day two years ago to raise funds for charity. Mr Froud’s Justgiving page is still open for donations.
