Battling anti-social media
Cyber bullying is use of the internet, email, online games, social media platforms or any digital technology to threaten, tease, upset or humiliate someone else.
Considering the prevalence of Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter and their ilk, it’s hardly surprising that abusive behaviour has spread into the virtual world.
But it’s still surprising to discover that four out of five of those we consider digital natives believe big firms operating these sites should take more responsibility for the content users are permitted to post.
Interaction with friends, relatives and even strangers can be a wonderful thing, sparking new connections and offering almost limitless opportunities.
However, it can also allow misery and fear to invade a person’s life 24 hours a day, leaving no refuge from those intent on causing distress.
The current generation of youths have grown up in the social media age, yet they are crying out for help to handle electronic harassment.
Should there be stricter policing? Probably – but strong warnings about abuse and simple reporting procedures would be a good start.
