Guishan delivers for Appleby

● In-foal mare off to the paddock with fine win at Hamilton

- By GORDON BROWN

Guishan retired to the paddocks on a winning note with a thrilling all-the-way success in the EBF Stallions Flower Of Scotland Fillies’ Handicap at Hamilton Park.

The Ali Rawlinson-ridden top-weight, who is in foal to Cable Bay, was sent off 15-8 favourite for the £20,000 dash over six furlongs.

Trained by Mick Appleby in Rutland, she held off Southern Belle by a neck

The mare’s owner/breeder Brian Cantle said: “She has always been pretty useful and has done me proud over the years.

“That will probably be it for her now and she is due to have quite a late foal in May next year.”

What Wonders Weave was retained without a bid after winning the BB Food Service “Hopes N Dreams” Selling Stakes for the Pat Shanahan/ Rowan Scott combination.

Irish-based Shanahan said: “We love bringing our horses over and the course seems to suit them. This filly won her maiden here back in the spring and she was fancied to win today.”

Shanahan and Scott completed a 33-1 double when Souls In The Wind sprang a 12-1 surprise in division two of the Visit The All New Racing Uk.com Handicap.

The victories of What Wonders Weave and Souls In The Wind cemented the leading trainers’ award at the Lanarkshire track for Jimmy Long’s Thistle Bloodstock for the third successive season.

Rigoletto is the pick today in Chepstow’s Equestrian Surfaces Handicap.

Luca Cumani has given this runner an entry in the Cambridgeshire later this month which suggests he is showing a bit of something at home.

He just grabbed third in the dying strides at Salisbury last time on quick ground, but a little more ease in the surface here is a big plus.

You will have to wait until pretty late in the day for the 32Red Handicap at Kempton, but Solo Mission can reward punters’ patience in the 12-furlong heat.

A beautifully-bred individual, Solo Mission appears to have improved for a gelding operation and boasts a 50 per cent strike-rate for William Haggas so far in 2017.

Beaten a length on his return to action in May, Solo Mission was off the mark at Carlisle the following month beforelosing out at Salisbury on his next start.

Solo Mission got back on the right track at Ripon with a twoand-a-half-length victory after kicking for home with over a quarter of a mile to run.

The handicapper has been a bit harsh in raising him 6lb for that win but Solo Mission clearly has more to give and can defy this perch of 80.
