True to Life: British Realist Painting in the 1920s and 1930s

- Duncan Macmillan

Between the wars, Modernism was in full cry, but if some British artists were not persuaded by it, that didn’t mean they were just fuddy-duddies. A lot of them continued to paint in a way that looked back to the Prerapahelites and High Victorian painting even while taking account of the new styles. True to Life: British Painting in the 1920s and 1930s brings together a remarkable collection of their work and much of it is very beautiful. Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh, until 29 October, 0131-624 6200
