raphy doesn’t come into it. It is solely to protect the 6,700 jobs at and around Faslane – a brilliant example of parish pump politics winning over common sense! HUGH PENNINGTON Carlton Place, Aberdeen Does [Nato secretary-general} Jens Stoltenberg live in a hermetically-sealed vacuum? After reviewing British troops in Estonia, he sees the world at a dangerous crossroads.

He singles out the following reason: “We have a proliferation of weapons of mass destruction in North Korea... and an assertive Russia.”

If one replaces North Korea with all the states that have weapons of mass destruction, such as the US with its current irascible and unpredictable “Tweeter” and allies, the dangers are even greater.

Change Stoltenberg’s comment from an assertive Russia to an expansive and paranoid assertive Nato on the borders with Russia, and the threat from Nato can be seen as equally true! But Nato has an manifest entitlement.

Why do such “leaders” in the West not see that they, too, are part of the tension? Do they also suffer from the “Gott mit uns” delusion?
