Free-scoring Melrose have chance for revenge at Ayr

- By GARY HEATLY

Ayr and Melrose meet in a repeat of last year’s BT Premiership final this afternoon at Millbrae.

Ayr took the spoils at The Greenyards at the end of last season, but since then Melrose have gone to Millbrae and won the BT Charity Shield and then started the regular season with a bang. They have scored 105 points in wins over Watsonians and Boroughmuir.

Ayr have won one and lost one and have not quite hit top form as yet.

Tighthead prop Steven Longwell has returned from Australia and starts for the home side, with Harry Warr coming in at scrum-half in place of the injured David Armstrong.

Ruairi Mcleod comes in at tighthead prop for Melrose with Edinburgh Rugby’s Ally Miller startingatno8.

Currie Chieftains

are second and they are at Meggetland to play

Boroughmuir.

Callum Mackintosh, a former ’Muir player, gets the nod at hooker, with Ruaraidh Smith fit and back on the wing.

Boroughmuir are still searching for their first win and they give Ben Renton and Archie Erskine debuts.

Stirling County have won two from two and they are at Myreside against winless Watsonians.

County welcome back experienced centre Ross Curle and the highly-rated Hamilton Burr comes into the second row.

Glasgow Hawks will test out their unbeaten start against Heriot’s at Scotstoun. With teenager Ross Thompson starting at stand-off for the home side it means he will be up against Stuart Edwards, the man who coached him at Stewart’s-melville. Finally, Hawick host

Marr at Mansfield Park. Hawick have stuck with the side that lost at Stirling seven days ago while USA internationalist Greg Peterson is released by Glasgow Warriors and starts for the visitors.

All kick-off at 3pm apart from Hawks v Heriot’s, which starts at 2pm.
