Magpies’ wings clipped on the south coast

Newcastle United missed out on the chance to move fourth in the Premier League when they lost 1-0 to Brighton at the Amex Stadium yesterday.

Tomer Hemed’s hooked strike six minutes after the interval sealed Chris Hughton’s first victory over former club Newcastle at the seventh time of asking.

Newcastle were the only side to do the double over Brighton in the Championsh­ip last season, but the Seagulls exacted some revenge by edging out the in-form visitors, who had arrived on the south coast boasting three league wins in a row.

Newcastle’s £5 million recruit Joselu screwed a great chance wide in the first half.

Hemed made no mistake in the second half when he struck after Dale Stephens had nodded a free-kick across goal.

In the Championsh­ip, meanwhile, Sheffield United beat Sheffield Wednesday in some style, winning 4-2 in the first Steel City derby since 2012. United were 2-0 up inside 15 minutes after former Rangers player John Fleck, pictured, curled in a free-kick and then Leon Clarke slotted home. Goals from ex-celtic striker Gary Hooper and Lucas Joao brought Wednesday level, before Mark Duffy and Clarke again restored the Blades’ two-goal cushion. Rothes came close to a first ever Scottish Cup win since they were formed in 1938, but had to settle for a 1-1 draw away to Edusport Academy.

At 1-1, they were awarded a spot-kick but Dale Gillespie was denied by keeper Ilies Belkacem. Edusport clung on after Angelo Steyer and Connor Higgins were red-carded.
