Appeal for much wider diversity in broadcasting

- By CATHERINE WYLIE

Broadcasters in the UK need to redouble their efforts to address a lack of diversity, it has been claimed.

London mayor Sadiq Khan has called on regulator Ofcom to adopt new measures to improve minority ethnic diversity in the industry.

In a letter to Ofcom, the mayor has set out proposals to ensure better diversity both on and off-screen. He has joined forces with Sir Lenny Henry to call on the regulator to provide more robust scrutiny of diversity in the sector.

He said: “The world looks to the UK as a beacon of diversity and so it’s vitally important the work of our broadcasting industry truly reflects the lives of our entire population.

An Ofcom spokesman said: “We share the mayor’s concern that broadcasters must do more to improve diversity.”
