Berra goes ‘crazy’ at Dens dithering

-

Arsene Wenger celebrated his 21st anniversary as Arsenal manager with a 2-0 win over Brighton and a brilliant team goal scored by Alex Iwobi.

Goals like Iwobi’s have become synonymous with Arsenal since Wenger took the reins on 1 October, 1996, and this was another gem, finished off after a delicate back-heel from Alexis Sanchez.

Nacho Monreal had earlier put the Gunners in front at Emirates Stadium as Wenger’s men won their third game in the space of six days following the win over West Brom on Monday and then over Belarusian side BATE Borisov in the Europa League on Thursday.

“We got the clean sheet, we got three points,” said Wenger. “Offensively we were in a bit of doubt, the fluency was sometimes there, sometimes not.

“It was a very testing week. We had two home games, one long away trip in the Europa League. We won the three games and that’s very positive.”

It wasn’t such a good Sunday afternoon for Everton manager Ronald Koeman after he watched his side lose 1-0 against Burnley at Goodison Park. Republic of Ireland international Jeff Hendrick finished off a sweeping 24-pass move in the 21st minute to seal the win and move Burlney on to 12 points – their best start to a Premier League campaign.

“If you play against a team who are defending so strong you need to be at your best. We didn’t have that creativity,” said Koeman, whose side have now slipped to four league defeats in the last five matches. 0 Hearts scorer Kyle Lafferty goes down under a challenge from Kevin Holt in Saturday’s Premiership fixture at Dens Park. Left, Dundee’s No 34 Kerr Waddell is mobbed by his team-mates after his second goal of the game – in stoppage time – won all three points.

In the final game of the day, Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw by Newcastle United at St James’ Park. Philippe Coutinho put the visitors ahead on 27 minutes with a sumptuous, curling strike but Newcastle were back on level terms nine minutes later when Joel Matip’s attempted clearance came back off Spanish striker Joselu and rolled into the net.
