T2 Trainspotting has secured five nominations from Bafta Scotland in this year’s awards shortlist.

The film leads the way with five nominations for Feature Film, Director Fiction and three nominations in the Actor Film category for Ewen Bremner, Robert Carlyle and Ewan Mcgregor.

The awards ceremony will take place in Glasgow on 5 November.

Ewan Mcgregor, Robert Carlyle and Ewen Bremner are to battle it out for Scottish Bafta honours for their performances in T2 Trainspotting.

The three stars, who reunited two decades after their appearance in the original hit, are the sole nominees in the best film actor category.

Director Danny Boyle will also be in the running for glory when Scotland’s answer to the Oscars is held in Glasgow on 5 November – and the longawaited sequel to the iconic 1996 film is also the hot favourite in the feature film category.

However, Still Game’s return to the nation’s TV screens last autumn after a nine-year hiatus was snubbed in the nominations.

Although the first episode attracted 1.3 million viewers, a change in Bafta Scotland’s rules meant sitcoms were dropped from the entertainment category this year. The move meant comedy shows were judged against drama for the first time for the new scripted television award.

Two crime dramas have been shortlisted for that award – In Plain Sight, which was based on the real-life serial killer Peter Manuel, and The Replacement, a psychological thriller set revolving around rival workers in an architectural practice. Also shortlisted is another BBC Scotland comedy, suburban sitcom Two Doors Down, which stars starring Elaine C Smith, Sharon Rooney and Alex Norton.

Bafta Scotland has defended the snub for Still Game following the rules change for the entertainment category, which was still open to chat shows, music programmes, variety shows, game shows, sketch shows and children’s entertainment. All Round to Mrs Brown’s, a talk show featuring the characters from the sitcom Mrs Brown’s Boys, is in the running for the entertainment award.

Bafta Scotland director Jude Maclaverty said: “Still Game wouldn’t have been eligible for the entertainment category this year.

“Comedy shows are now judged for the scripted television award. The three nominations that are there are three fantastic shows. You can’t take anything away from Two Doors Down, which is also produced by BBC Scotland.”

Edith Bowman, who is host- ing the awards ceremony next month, added: “They can’t be disappointed, Still Game has had so many nominations and awards. There are other things out there. You can’t see into the minds of the jurors.”

Martin Compston and Douglas Henshall, who starred opposite each other in In Plain Sight, will compete for the best TV actor prize with Unforgiven star Mark Bonnar.

Morven Christie, Laura Fraser and Juliet Stevenson will compete for best TV actress for their roles in The Replacement, The Missing and One of Us respectively.
