Israel and US to pull out of Unesco
Israel has announced plans to pull out of Unesco after repeated criticism of resolutions by the United Nations cultural agency that are viewed as hostile to the country. The announcement came shortly after the US government said it would leave the agency. While the US stopped funding Unesco after it voted to include Palestine as a member in 2011, the state department has maintained a Unesco office at its Paris headquarters and sought to weigh in on policy behind the scenes.
Unesco director-general Irina Bokova expressed “profound regret” at the decision.
