Comment is often made that one of the Scotland team’s problems is a lack of Scottish players playing in England’s top league. That league now shops in a superstore and not the local shop it did in the days when Scots in numbers starred it. Scottish clubs, meanwhile, can only afford to shop in the bargain basement. Rangers started with nine non Scots in their side– Saints three. I suspect none in light blue will be remembered in 20 years’ time.

The debate about the new Academy system begs the question – would the best solution be for the SFA to take control centrally with the system financed and managed by them. One benefit would be young players would be coached to play how the national team play.
