Highlighti­ng the fact that there is a greater reliance on farm support in Scotland than in the rest of the UK –accounting for around two thirds of farm income – the report states that getting the right outcome in this area will be crucial.

While distance from markets and lack of processing facilities are likely to put the cereal, dairy and potato sectors at a slight disadvanta­ge within the UK, the challenges and threats to these sectors will be broadly similar to those in the rest of the country.

However, with large areas of marginal grazing, it is in the country’s greater reliance on output from livestock – especially sheep and cattle in hill areas – which marks the starkest areas of difference and pinpoints where will be most affected by both trade deals and policy decisions.
