Diabetics ‘may be able to check blood sugar on go’

- By TONY WHITFIELD

Diabetics could soon monitor their blood sugar levels on a smartphone thanks to new research.

Experts said the smartphone case and app would make it easier for diabetics to record and track blood glucose readings while on the go.

Currently they have to carry around their glucose monitoring kits when they leave the house.

But the new device does it all on the phone and takes just 20 seconds. It has the added advantage that readings can be sent on to their GP or nurse after each test so their condition can be monitored remotely.

Since 1996, the number of people living with diabetes has more than doubled, with an estimated 3.5 million Britons diagnosed with the condition.

The new device, called Gphone, was developed by University of California San Diego engineers as a proof of concept. Professor of electrical and computer engineering Patrick Mercier said: “Integrating blood glucose sensing into a smartphone would eliminate the need for patients to carry a separate device.”
