Sammon is delighted to get off mark for Thistle

- By CRAIG FORBES

Conor Sammon admitted his first goal for Partick Thistle was a “huge” moment after it helped seal victory over mother well on Wednesday night.

The on-loan Hearts striker scored Thistle’s third goal in the 28th minute and they held off a Motherwell comeback to record a 3-2 win and cut the gap at the bottom of the Ladbrokes Premiership to one point on Dundee, whom they face at Dens Park tomorrow. Sammon was making his 15th appearance for Partick and the well-taken goal was a major relief.

“It’s huge,” he told the club’s Jagzone channel. “It’s huge for a striker. When you move to a new team you want to score goals, you want to score as soon as possible to really get that confidence again.

“So I am delighted to get it and really pleased to make a good contribution and hopefully that will be the first of many goals this season.”

Sammon’s and Miles Storey’s runs down the channels caused the Motherwell defence problems in the first half, with the latter winning the free-kick that led to Blair Spittal’s opener before setting up both Ryan Edwards and Sammon to score.

Sammon said: “Myself and Miles’ strengths, we love playing on the shoulder, we love playing in behind defences and putting teams under pressure and using our pace. It worked really well on Wednesday night.

“We feel we can do that in games, we have that pace that defenders don’t seem to like. Sometimes it can be a bit route one and direct, but if you’re doing it the right way and it’s working for you, then why not?

“I really enjoyed the game and I definitely think Miles did. I thought he was brilliant, setting up goals and always looking a threat, and unlucky not to get a goal himself in the second half.”

Sammon, 31, joined Partick on a season-long loan deal in August. He signed a three-year deal with Hearts in summer 2016 but scored just once and was loaned out to Kilmarnock in the second half of last season.
