#JOHNHUMPHRYS

BBC broadcaster John Humphrys has come under fire after a transcript of an off-air conversation appeared to show him mocking gender pay gap issues at the BBC.

@mk1969 predicted: “Maybe I’m overreacting – but I suspect this will be the end of John Humphrys. Very hard to lead #r4today and be this vulnerable to no-credibility charges from those you are supposed to be holding to account.”

@Claire_phipps asked: “Given several female BBC journalists weren’t permitted to report this week about pay inequality because they weren’t deemed impartial, I assume we won’t be hearing John Humphrys on the matter again, @Bbcr4today?”

@Rossmccaff wrote: “John Humphrys’ palpable biases and wildly inconsistent interviewing have been forgiven as eccentricities for too long. He is a grossly overpaid relic.”

#REASONICANCELLED

Twitter users were quick to seize on the news that Donald Trump wouldn’t be visiting London to open the new US Embassy. The president tweeted that a bad property deal was ‘The Reason I cancelled my trip’.

@Charliefoxmusic joked: “Reason I cancelled my trip to London is that I am not a big fan of hanging with “commoners.” I wasn’t invited to dine with the Royal Family and I will have to slum it in a regular hotel rather than sleep in a palace. Bad deal. NO!”

@Suzemclaughlin added: “Reason I cancelled my trip to London is I found out that the Lord Mayor is not actually a cat in nice boots. Valid reason. Bad deal. I said NO!”

HAWKSMOOR

Steakhouse Hawksmoor, which has six branches in London and one in Manchester, will open its first Scottish base in Edinburgh.

@Andrewfairlie1 predicted: “It’s just about to get tougher for independent restaurants in Edinburgh in an already tough market.”

@Lunchquest added: “A little disappointed it’s this venue they’re taking on as the parade of St Andrew Square chains is having a really negative impact on local eateries.”

@Exec_chef_ agreed: “Oh great! ANOTHER chain restaurant in the city centre. Just what Edinburgh needs.” But @Charliehouston wrote: “Their Sunday roasts are to die for! Highly recommended.”
