Mixed day for Scots women
Scotland’s women endured mixed fortunes at the European Indoor Championships II in Brussels yesterday, writes Craig Madden.
The Scots started with a 5-0 win over Wales in the opening game only to fall by the same score to hosts Belgium later in the day.
The thumping victory over the Welsh had put the Scots top of the group on goal difference from Belgium who beat Croatia 4-0 in the other match.
An open-play double from Dundee Wanderers’ teenage striker Emily Dark seemed to knock the stuffing out of the Welsh, although Chris Anderson’s charges failed to add to the tally by the interval.
Any hint of a Welsh revival was stifled when Edinburgh University’s Louise Campbell added a third a minute after the break.
It was then Vikki Bunce’s turn to torment the flagging Welsh defence as she scored twice in four minutes to seal the victory.
However, the Scots failed to find the net against Belgium, leaving their qualification for the promotion play-offs in jeopardy.
