Delegates hope for a Wmd-free Middle East
An international team working to rid the Middle East of weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East yesterday said they were optimistic of achieving their goal.
Representatives of civil society across the region met in Edinburgh to discuss a draft treaty designed to encourage Middle Eastern states that it is possible to stamp out nuclear and chemical weapons.
The draft treaty was the subject of the MENA WMD Free Zone conference, hosted by UN House Scotland and sponsored by Edinburgh City Council.
Participants hope that by producing a treaty they can set an example to governments in the Middle East, where the task of getting rid of WMD has proved incredibly complex.
Sharon Dolev of the Israelidisarmamentmovement said she was “optimistic” the conference could make a difference.
