From Runrig to potential key role in running SNP

- By TOM PETERKIN

Pete Wishart was a rock musician before entering politics, playing keyboards for the Gaelic-singing band Runrig. He entered the House of Commons as North Tayside MP in 2001 and has served as the member for Perth and North Perthshire since 2005.

He is currently the chair of the Scottish affairs select committee.in the past he has served as Westminster chief whip.

Regarded as an outspoken politician, he has courted controversy through his prolific use of social media. On Twitter, he has found himself at the centre of rows after describing No voters as “Nawbags” and Blairites as “incontinent old relatives”.

Another controversial episode occurred when the journalist Stephen Daisley accused Mr Wishart and the former SNP MP John Nicolson of pressuring STV bosses in an effort to stop him writing.
