Cold comfort

-

Scotland is a cold country, as this long winter shows. There are 649,000 households in Scotland in fuel poverty including nearly 40 per cent of rural households.

But the Eu-inspired Climate Change Act requires gas to be replaced by electricity for heating. This will make heating your home more than twice as expensive, plus the big cost of replacing your gas boiler with an electric one.

Yet, the SNP government has increased spending on “climate change measures” by 20 per cent to £558m, which will not make the slightest difference to climate change but will increase fuel prices. That sum could give every fuelpoor household some £860 to spend on heating. In addition, the SNP have banned fracking for cheap gas.

Leaving the EU gives us the chance to reshape our energy policy to reduce costs, not increase them. Let’s go for it. WILLIAM LONESKIE
