- By SCOTT REID

Smart Metering Systems has extended an existing contract, first signed in June 2016 with First Utility, covering more than 200,000 meters.

The Glasgow-based firm said yesterday it will provide First Utility with in excess of 220,000 new domestic smart meters during 2018 as part of a UK government programme requiring energy supply companies to offer all of their customers a smart meter in homes and small businesses by 2020.

SMS chief executive Alan Foy said: “Our extended commitment from First Utility is evidence of our strong track record for customer service delivery, asset ownership and management with a major energy supplier’ s smart meter roll out programme.”

Earlier this week, the firm revealed that it had landed a new contract with an energy supplier covering tens of thousands of smart meters.

SMS said its meter rental agreement with Utilita Energy to provide an opportunity for more than 100,000 meters during 2018 would start immediately.
