‘UK must not change rules during transition’
The UK must not be allowed to change its rules on free movement during the two-year Brexit transition period, the European Parliament’s chief negotiator on the issue has said.
Guy Verhofstadt said it was “not acceptable” for the government to alter the rules on immigration for EU citizens while also demanding that those on trade and finance stayed the same.
The Belgian MEP also warned of a “crisis in British politics” if the UK parliament votes down any Brexit deal agreed by Theresa May.
Mr Verhofstadt insisted free movement of people from the EU to the UK must remain unchanged until the proposed two-year Brexit transition period ends in 2020.
