Red Clydesider: Statue of 1915 rent strike heroine Mary Barbour unveiled in Govan
NORTH LANARKSHIRE
Hundreds of people gather at Govan Cross, Glasgow, for the unveiling of the Mary Barbour Statue on International Women’s day. In November 1915, Barbour led 20,000 tenants in a march against rent rises. She organised resistance to evictions with supporters known as “Mrs Barbour’s army”. She later stood for election as a Labour candidate in Govan, becoming one of the first women councillors in the city.
