School on lockdown after gun incident

A primary school was put on lockdown after a man was seen carrying a weapon around the town centre – which later turned out to be a toy gun.

The alarm was raised at Inverlochy Primary School in Fort William following the sighting of “a male with a weapon” in the Camanachd Crescent area of the town.

Police have confirmed no one was injured and that a man was arrested.

Inspector Mike Middlehurs­t said: “We received numerous reports from members of the public about the behaviour of a man near the centre of Fort William.

“I can confirm that the man has now been arrested and is in police custody. An item was was recovered from the man which has since been confirmed as being a toy gun.

“Nobodywasi­njuredduri­ng the incident. We are grateful to the members of the public who contacted us for their vigilance.”

Ahighlandc­ouncilstat­ement said: “The lockdown went very smoothly and after correspond­ence with the police, normal classes resumed as the person is in custody.

“The school thanks those who phoned to inform them of the incident and to their staff and pupils who reacted admirably.”
