Montrose get chance to go top after thrashing Stirling

-

Peterhead continue to lead the way after their 3-1 success at Berwick Rangers but Montrose, who defeated Stirling Albion 5-0, will go into the home straight at the summit if they win their game in hand at Cowdenbeath tomorrow evening.

Russell Mclean fired the Blue Toon into the lead on 32 minutes and Jason Brown headed in the second before the break. Mclean added a close-range third 20 minutes after the restart, with Jack Hamilton grabbing a consolation goal for the hosts, who have still to shake off Cowdenbeath at the foot of the table. Balmoor manager Jim Mcinally said: “The players deserve great credit for turning in such a good performance on a really heavy pitch against a team who were fighting to get away from issues at the bottom of the table.”

Martin Rennie shot Montrose into the lead at Forthbank on 27 minutes with Lewis Milne grabbing a second half hat-trick and Cammy Ballantyne also scoring against the third-placed side who had Willie Robertson dismissed at 2-0 down.

Stenhousemuir are back up to fourth after a 4-1 win at Edinburgh City where goals from Harry Paton, Colin Mcmenamin and debutant Andrew Dallas had the Warriors in control. Cameron Blues pulled a goal back for City, who are also now looking over their shoulder at bottom spot, before Andrew Dallas added a fourth.

Elgin City’s play-off hopes took a knock when they went down 4-1 at Annan Athletic, where goals from Scott Roberts and Aidan Smith had the hosts cruising until Shane Sutherland pulled a goal back. The Galabank men responded to that set-back through Conor O’keefe and Blair Henderson.

Cowdenbeath gave their hopes of avoiding finishing bottom a boost with a 1–0 win over Clyde at Central Park, where Brad Smith shot home the winner midway through the second half.
