Still funny?

-

Still Game’s final episode of the current series, which saw Scots comic Craig Ferguson guest star, came in for negative criticism.

I have to admit that this series was woeful, the only one that had me laughing was the one where Alec died. The rest of the episodes have been dismal and unfunny. In fact, it gave all the impression of having been written by different writers. I get the impression that Kiernan and Hemphill are bored with it now and it showed.

I switched the final episode off halfway through. It’s like the writers have run out of ideas and are relying too much on improbable events and liberal use of swear words. Like Alec, it should be given a sudden death rather than being allowed to linger.

This episode had all the ingredients to be a great finale, but actually everything fell flat. The unveiling of Craig Ferguson’s character’s true self should have been funny, but instead it was akward and a little sad.

Nah even at its worst, Still Game is better than most other UK sitcoms. It’s nowhere near as bad as say Benidorm (which should have ended at three series) or Not Going Out. How anyone didn’t chuckle at Edith’s appearance or Jack and Victor’s fall into the water is beyond me. Bring on Series 9!

Moving the show to a national audience only helped dilute the winning formula. No more neds, devil dugs, benefit scams etc. Instead we got a reliance on madcap situations which were dragged out over the full show with little to laff about. I’ll stick with Netflix repeats where the patter standing in Jack’s kitchen for 5 minutes was funnier than the entire last series.
