Capital sports drink start-up secures cash

- By SCOTT REID

An Edinburgh-based start-up producing what is said to be the world’s first ginger-based sports drink has secured a new round of investment funding totalling £100,000.

Active Root’s sports drink contains root ginger, which is proven to help prevent stomach issues when doing exercise.

The product is stocked across Scotland including at Tiso and Run4it branches and the firm is selling at the Lon- don Marathon for the first time this weekend.

Co-founder Will Townsend said: “After extensive market research we found stomach issues and nausea are common problems experienced by athletes during and after exercise. Members of the endurance sport scene, especially distance runners, cyclists and triathletes prefer Active Root as it prevents these issues.

“The investment will help us continue to develop our product range, employ two members of staff and grow our reach.”
