Grange at the double as students fail

- By CRAIG MADDEN

Grange claimed their sixth Scottish Cup – and, in turn, completed the league and cup double –with a 6-3 win over Edinburgh University in the final at Glasgow Green on Saturday. The victory was achieved by a combination of lethal finishing from David Knipe’s charges and some sloppy defending by the students.

Edinburgh were caught cold by the opportunism of Frank Ryan in only 20 seconds. The Irishman found space in the circle and fired a fierce reverse-stick shot past the keeper. Four minutes later Ryan doubled the lead. A poor clearance was punished when he deflected a John Mccluskey cross into the net.

Joe Waterston effectively killed off the contest with a third after further poor defending by the students. Peter Mcknight did pull one back for University but the first-half slaughter was complete when Callum Milne, from the spot, and then Luke Cranney gave Grange a commanding 5-1 lead. Kevin Wong did get another one for Edinburgh just before the interval.

The second half was a more even affair. Gordon Amour scored University’s second but that was cancelled out by a strike from Mccluskey after Camie Fraser’s initial shot was blocked by the keeper. The students pressed to get back into the game but Grange held firm to take the silverware.

But there was joy for edinburgh University in yesterday’ s women’ s Scottish Cup final as they claimed the trophy in some style, winning 4-1 over Grove Menzieshill.

Like Grange in the men’s game, that too completed a league and cup double for the students.

Grove took an unexpected lead when Katie Stott slotted home a penalty corner which went in off a defender, but Edinburgh were soon level with a close-range flick by Zara Malseed after Sam Judge had created the opening.

University dominated after that and goals from Louise Campbell and Hanna Mckie gave them a 3-1 interval lead, before Amy Brodie made it 4-1.
