Save STV

-

The closure of S TV 2 is hardly surprising news, but it highlights the problems the BBC will face when it shunts quality Scottish programmes from BBC 2 off to abackwaterch ann el. Also, the proposed BBC flag ship Nine O’ Clock Scottish News will be competing against peak viewing programmes on the main channels.

Also concerning is S TV’ s reduction of Edinburgh news and sports coverage from 30 minutest oaten-minute optin segment and the threat to our only daily current affairs programme, Scotland Tonight, as they axe 34 jobs from their news coverage.

ST Vis in grave danger of failing in its public service obligation as its lashes jobs, plus Scottish news and current affairs output, in preparation for a sell-off to IT Vat the behest of aggressive quick buck offshore investors.

Faced with a highly partisan London- controlled press, it is important that we have broadcasters who are based in, and understand, Scotland.

Having sabotaged the Scottish Six proposals in 2007, Labour should now apologise for not supporting demands that broadcasting be devolved under the 2016 Scotland Act in order to ensure both STV and BBC fulfil their obligations to Scotland.
