Salmondredux?

-

The attraction of headlines and the limelight will forever attract Alex Salmond, no matter how ridiculous and irrelevant his “Declarations” from Morningside to RT television have become.

However, there is one positive to come out from his “declaration” that he will get involved in another independence referendum once Nicola Sturgeon “fires the starting gun”, as he describes it, and that is the fact that his desire to be involved will be music to the ears of “No” supporters and perhaps more worrying for any “Yes” campaign supporters, bearing in mind how his inadequacies were so quickly demonstrated in the previous “once in a lifetime” referendum.

The SNP’S only hope is to become a lot more Euro-sceptic. The present Eu-friendly leadership, plus our Alex, has to go if the Scottish electorate is ever to vote for independence (as I wish).

Three out of eight voters opted for Brexit, despite there being no strong Ukip campaign. The Euro currency is now a zombie, which not even the most bigoted EU zealots mention positively any more; Scotland and the UK are well out of it.

Another point: assuming a second, successful referendum were held in, say, 2024, would the electorate be allowed to vote again once every ten years, or would the ratchet principle so beloved by the EU apply (“there’s no going back)?

In other words, make the beggars vote again until the “right” result is forthcoming, as was the case in the EU’S former showcase state, the Irish Republic.

Speaking ontv over the weekend, Ni cola Sturgeon dodged a question about when she’d like Indyref2 to take place by saying “in the autumn... after the Brexit outcome... I will consider again the question of the timing of an independence referendum”.

Ms Sturgeon continues to maintain the fantasy that she’s in charge. Is there anyone left in Scotland who doesn’t know that Theresa May makes the decision and has repeatedly made clear that the democratic result of the 2014 “once in a generation” vote will be respected and that “now is not the time” will continue until after the next Holyrood election?
