Only one Scottish firm fined over data breach

- By PERRY GOURLEY

Only one Scottish business was fined over data protection law breaches last year, according to new research.

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) fined the company £80,000 after it was found to have made more than 100,000 marketing calls to numbers which individuals had asked not be used for cold-calling.

But with no other firms being fined, Scotland has Britain’s best data protection compli- ance record according to the figures compiled by PWC. Last year there were a total of 91 enforcements Uk-wide. The findings come ahead of the introduction of the new GDPR data rules on Friday.

Pwc’s head of cyber security in Scotland, Colin Slater, said: “While it is good to see Scotland leading the way in compliance, there remains an issue with marketing infringements and all businesses must ensure they are complying with the GDPR, given the scale of fines the ICO will be able to enforce.”
