Theglasgowwarrior eyes Musselburgh and Carlisle battles after triumph at Hamilton

- By GORDON BROWN

Theglasgowwarrior has two more significant targets in his sights after his narrow success in the feature race at Hamilton yesterday.

Under a cool ride from Barry Mchugh, the 8-1 chance pipped 6-4 favourite Jabbaar by a neck in the DM Hall Chartered Surveyors Cadzow Castle Handicap.

Winning trainer Jim Goldie said: “The plan was to come here and win the Braveheart Stakes earlier this month but he was only fourth so this was a nice consolation. I thought the favourite was the main danger and that’s the way it panned out in the end.

“Barry gave him a peach of a ride and the idea was to hit the front as late as possible and he delivered the goods perfectly. We will take our medicine from the handicapper and go for the Edinburgh Gin Handicap over 1m 4f at Musselburgh a week on Saturday and then the Cumberland Plate over the same trip at Carlisle later in June.”

Goldie, pictured, was still smiling after Tuesday’s success by Jessie Allan who opened her account at the 41st attempt at Redcar.

He added: “I’m delighted as she has finally rewarded the patience of his Clarkson owner Robert and it was also the first winner for our amateur rider Corey Madden.”

Lanarkshire-born Paula Muir got on the scoresheet aboard Duck Egg Blue in the Roa/racing Post Owners’ Jackpot Fillies’ Handicap. Muir, who earlier this year was appointed stable apprentice to Michael Dods, has a good record on the seven-length winner.

In today’s Investec Oaks at Epsom, Forever Together can lose her maiden tag in the best way possible. She looked a filly very much on the improve when staying on in taking fashion for second place behind her Aidan O’brien stablemate Magic Wand in the Cheshire Oaks on the Roodee.

That was only her third career start and her first since October but she gave the impression she would come on in leaps and bounds for that run.

Her inexperience showed but she stayed on nicely with Donnacha O’brien being sympathetic in the saddle as she grabbed the runner-up spot in the last 100 yards.

Stamina is assured judged on that effort and she looks the pick of the O’brien pack. As for the places, Godolphin’s Wild Illusion looks the main danger. Fourth in the 1,000 Guineas, she will relish the step up to a mile and a half. William Haggas’ Give And Take won the Musidora at York and that gives her each-way claims.

Cracksman was the best horse to come out of last year’s Derby and he can prove the point in the Investec Coronation Cup.

John Gosden’s colt was far from the finished article when a close third to Wings Of Eagles in the premier Classic but subsequent events showed the race came too soon in his career.

He ended 2017 with a convincing victory in the Champion Stakes and started 2018 off in fine style in the Prix Ganay at Parislongchamp.
