Norrie books third-round place with win over Jaziri

- By EVE FODENS

British No 3 Cameron Norrie is through to the second round of the BB&T Atlanta Open after beating Malek Jaziri yesterday.

Norrie, ranked 73 in the world, overcame Tunisia’s 34-year-old world No 60 Jaziri 7-5 6-0 in Georgia.

Norrie battled back to claim the first set after going 5-3 down when his serve was broken for the second time.

The 22-year-old Scot then had a far more comfortable time of it in the second set as he wrapped up the win in an hour and 15 minutes.

Norrie will now face sixthseeded Frenchman Jeremy Chardy, who defeated Lithuania’s Ricardas Berankis 6-4, 6-3.

Meanwhile, Gael Monfils made a strong start to his German Championships campaign in Hamburg, beating Marco Cecchinato 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 yesterday.

The 2011 quarter-finalist broke in the final game of the match to stun sixth-seeded Cecchinato after one hour and 40 minutes. Cecchinato entered Hamburg in great form, having reached a careerhigh No 22 in the ATP rankings after lifting his second tourlevel trophy of the season in Umag last week.

The 31-year-old Frenchman put 95 per cent of first serves into court and converted three of his five break-point chances to secure victory.

“I was very good in my movement, but also my serve,” said Monfils. “I like to serve with a little bit less speed, reach his backhand and try to control the court with my forehand, so I was happy with that.”

Monfils will face two-time champion Leonardo Mayer in the second round. Mayer dropped just five games in his first-round win over Albert Ramos-vinolas on Monday.
