Foxes refuse to relent as United pursue Maguire

- By COLIN STEWART

Leicester are determined to keep Harry Maguire and will tell Manchester United he is not for sale.

The Foxes intend to resist any offer which United may make amid growing interest from Old Trafford.

They are preparing to offer Maguire a new deal, which has been planned as a reward following his fine season at the King Power Stadium.

The £17million signing from Hull last summer enjoyed an excellent debut campaign and starred for England in their run to the World Cup semi-finals.

Maguire, pictured, started every league game for the Foxes in 2017-18 and won the club’s Player of the Season award. The 25-year-old has four years left to run on his current deal and there is no pressure on the Foxes to sell.

Leicester do not want to lose Maguire after they sold Riyad Mahrez for £60m to Manchester City earlier this month.

United have been linked with Maguire this summer with manager Jose Mourinho searching for two new signings.

The transfer window closes in two weeks – a day before United host Leicester in the Premier League opener on 10 August.

“One thing is what I would like,” Mourinho told ESPN FC. “Another thing is what is going to happen.

“I would (like to) get two more players.” l Chelsea have completed the signing of veteran goalkeeper Rob Green on a oneyear deal.

The 38-year-old was released by Huddersfield at the end of last season and jumped at the chance of the move to Stamford Bridge.

Green will start as third choice behind Thibaut Courtois and Willy Caballero.

Green told Chelsea’s official website: “It has been a whirlwind 24 hours.

“You are thinking about your career and where you want to go and you get a phone call like this, and it is a short conversation. “I can’t wait to get started. I am absolutely delighted and it is a thrill and an honour to be here.” l Newcastlehavemadeswitzerland international Fabian Schar their fourth signing of the summer.

Schar, who played three games for his country in the World Cup finals in Russia, has joined from Deportivo La Coruna on a three-year contract.

The 26-year-old joins Martin Dubravka, Ki-sung yueng and Kenedy among Rafael Benitez’s new recruits.

Schar told Newcastle’s official website: “I’m really happy to be here. It is a brilliant chance for me.”
