Topping Tiger /Johnson beats Woods’ record

-

World No 1 Dustin Johnson claimed his 19th PGA Tour title with victory at the Canadian Open in Ontario.

Going into the final day at Glen Abbey Golf Club, the American was in a four-way tie including Kim Meenwhee, An Byeong-hun and Kevin Tway, but dropped only one shot in the final round to win by three strokes.

Johnson’s success topped Tiger Woods’ record of 18 wins in the last decade. “Obviously I’m doing something very well,” he said. “To even be mentioned in the same sentence as Tiger means a lot.

“What he’s done for the game, the things he’s done in the game. No one is ever really going to get to that level.”

The win cemented Johnson’s position at the top of the Fedex Cup standings, which he now leads by more than 500 points from Justin Thomas, with Justin Rose a little bit further back in third.

“Obviously, right now I’m in a very good position,” he admitted. “I’m going to have to continue to play well though if I want to be in that No 1 spot heading into Atlanta for the Tour Championship.”

at Bellerive in St Louis.

“He works so hard on and off the golf course and he put in the work this week, and got it done,” his coach, Claude Harmon, told pgatour.com.

“He feels good on a golf course like this, with so many

wedges in his hand. He can make birdies with his wedge game. And when he plays like this, he’s one of those guys who are tough to beat.”

Kim and An finished on 20 under, both mixing five birdies and two bogeys for a final round of 69. American Tway,

whose father Bob won the same tournament at Hamilton Golf and Country Club in 2003, had a disappointing afternoon, hitting five bogeys and only one birdie to finish tied for 17th.

Keegan Bradley recovered from a third-round 73 to fire a

blemish-free eight-under 64 and finish a shot behind Kim and An.

Tommy Fleetwood was the best-placed Briton, tied for sixth on 16 under after sinking an eagle on the par-five 13th hole. Ian Poulter ended in joint 12th on 14 under.
